IDW and Fortinet: How to Turn the "CISO's Nightmare" into Active Cyber Resilience

Last Tuesday, July 7th, IDW, in close partnership with Fortinet, brought together technology leaders and decision-makers in Lisbon to discuss the rapid evolution of digital threats and the strategies shaping the future of data protection. The keynote session, led by David Antunes (Business Development Manager) under the theme "Ransomware: The CISO Nightmare", provided a candid analysis of market data and the architectural responses needed to curb cybercrime.

The current reality leaves no room for doubt: 44% of security breaches involve ransomware (a significant increase from 32% the previous year). With attackers leveraging Artificial Intelligence to refine phishing, extortion, and evasion tactics, 52% of SecOps managers admit that managing infrastructure is much harder today than it was two years ago.

The Critical Cost of Time

One of the key points discussed at the event was the financial and operational impact of reaction time. With the average cost of a data breach reaching $9.4 million and strict regulatory requirements (such as SEC rules mandating the disclosure of material incidents in just 4 days), traditional reactive models have collapsed.

Traditionally, the entire process from detection to remediation of an attack can drag on for 21 days. During the session, we demonstrated how the Fortinet AI-Driven SecOps platform radically shifts this paradigm, reducing the total investigation and remediation time from an average of 18.5 hours to just 10 minutes.

Defense in Depth Architecture

To break the kill chain at every stage, the Fortinet ecosystem presented is based on a Defense in Depth strategy:

- FortiEndpoint & FortiEDR: AI/ML-based endpoint protection that stops and blocks attacks (including ransomware and fileless malware) in real time, before execution.

- FortiMail Workspace: Advanced security for email and SaaS collaboration tools. With 99.95% detection accuracy and dynamic scanning, it uses Image Recognition models to neutralize modern threats like Quishing (phishing via QR Codes).

- FortiNDR: Continuous monitoring and behavioral analysis using AI to hunt for signs of malicious activity on the network.

- FortiDeceptor (Deception Technology): Creation of a network of decoys to detect and trap intruders early in IT, Healthcare, and Industrial (OT) environments.

Consolidation to Reduce Risk

The event's conclusion reinforced the global trend toward simplification. According to Gartner data shared by David Antunes, 97% of organizations are moving toward security vendor consolidation strategies to improve their risk posture and address the talent shortage. Through the unified FortiOS operating system, Fortinet positions itself as the ideal manufacturer to deliver this simplification across the entire attack surface.

Thank you to Fortinet, to David Antunes for the excellent presentation, and to all the clients who joined us last Tuesday to build a more secure digital ecosystem. 🤝
