A recent example of this is a recent project in an Insurance client, where IDW was challenged to design several evolution scenarios for a core Business system, a system with an high operational cost deriving from software licensing from manufaturers such as Oracle (database), Dell (Mainframe rehosting) and Microfocus (COBOL compiler). Other variables to take into account were the footprint (the customer uses an hosting provider), hardware maintenance costs as well as energy consumption/heat output.

We meausered the effective usage for the infrastructure during a full business cycle and we designed several scenarios we submitted to the customer´s consideration. All scenarios had two major guidelines - to completely address the technical (performance and scalability) requisites and to maximize license usage and (where possible) reduce operational cost. The adopted solution (which IDW implemented) completely addressed all objectives, with a perceptible performance increase and a reduction in licencing cost that easily covered all investment, with a positive ROI within 3 years.
